Benjamin Sibelman
Design Portfolio
I'm a designer on a mission. I graduated from the University of Washington in 2023 with a degree in Human-Centered Design, but my goal is to practice something bigger and better, Life-Centered Design. My creations are intended to serve not only the needs of my clients, but also those of all the people and other beings around them. If you share that ideal and need an app or website designed for you or your organization, you’ve come to the right place.

Services
Fully illustrated case study!

The final group project in the Sustainable Interaction Design course for my HCDE Master's program, which I took because I'm deeply committed to designing things that have a positive impact on the planet. I contributed extensively to the design of the overall service, did a stakeholder analysis, and created a Figma prototype of our proposed OS changes, as well as Photoshop visualizations of the mailers and instruction booklets. Friend Finder end-to-end service design project

The group project in the intro course for the HCDE Master's program, my first experience with the full Human-Centered Design lifecycle. Our project goal was to help residents of senior-living facilities get more social interaction. I provided leadership for the team to run meetings and keep people on track, created and tested a paper prototype, and wrote the vast majority of the final design spec.
Phone Apps
More concise, fully illustrated case study coming soon!

One of two group projects in the Psychology of UX course for my HCDE Master's program. I set the design goal, "Help people live their values and make a difference in the world," which is what I most want to do with my design skills after I graduate. I created the "Select communities of activists you’d like to join" flow and the "View all Streaks users who did the same action" feature in the final Figma prototype.
Village Market app prototype

An individual project in the HCDE Interaction Design course. I designed a shoppping app from scratch, developed several detailed user scenarios based on a provided persona, and created a low-fi prototype for one of them.
XR Prototypes
Ecosystem Restoration VR Simulation

The final group project in the Designing for VR course I took for the HCDE program, on a topic I'm deeply passionate about. We developed low-fidelity prototypes in CoSpaces and Unity, with the latter including complex interactions, and tested them on the Oculus Quest 2.
Urban Evolution Visualizer system video sketch

My final project in the Interaction Design course I took for the HCDE program. This "video sketch" involved photos combined with imagery I created in Photoshop and Illustrator to visualize a virtual- and mixed-reality design and presentation system for urban planning.
User Research
More concise case study coming soon!

My capstone project for the entire Human-Centered Design and Engineering program at the University of Washington. I worked with three other students to research, ideate, prototype, test, and iterate on a design for a persuasive educational experience about insect-based pet food that encompassed collectible cards, mobile games, and physical rewards. I focused mainly on ensuring that our work throughout the project was based in solid user research to keep our designs human-centered. I also created a video prototype of the final design.
SHARE-NW usability study

The quarter-long group project for the aptly named Usability Studies course in the HCDE Master's program. We worked with a UW professor whose research and design team was prototyping a real-world website providing medical data to staff in rural health departments. We did six local and six remote study sessions using a think-aloud protocol, with a moderator and a notetaker at each session; I played each role several times.
Case study of decision-making in an intentional community

The quarter-long group project for the Qualitative Research Methods course I took for the HCDE program. We did ethnographic observation in five decision-making meetings in my own community and interviewed three participants after each one, then coded and analyzed our notes to generate recommendations for improvement.
